Day 3-Do You Even Turn Bro?

Jadyn Adams

Updated: Feb 2, 2024

Today was our first full day in Providencia, and it was fairly eventful. We started our day off with a thrill by taking Jonathan's truck over to the Cafe where Juan served us a delicious breakfast of eggs, rice&beans, sausage, and avocado with a side of watermelon. There was a little hiccup with the solar at the jobsite, and out of a group full of engineers, it took a local (we hadn't caught his name) who had just happened to be passing by to notice the problem was just a loose breaker!

After dropping supplies off at the jobsite, we stopped by Luis’ house to study the workings of his biogarden, we took that knowledge to the next house, Andrea’s, where we would be making a biogarden for their home as well. We had scoped out the jobsite and dropped off the supplies, now it was time for the real work to begin.

We split into two groups: Alexes, Joana, James, Lalo, Omar, where to mix concrete with Johnathan; separately, Chris, Eric, Liam, and Yolo, bent, cut, and tied rebar with Rhoxanne. Despite the intense work, mixing concrete in the sun was especially laborious, there was an atmosphere of satisfaction as we were finally able to get something done.

After lunch at Doña Flora’s and a little rest, we were off to the soccer field to play with the Young Dreamers and local youth. Some of us played volleyball with an imaginary net while others played soccer, though eventually everyone ended up playing soccer before gathering in a large circle where we discussed who we were, our interest, and goals. One that especially stands out was little Mateo, he wants to be a firefighter, adorable!

Coffeecita was talkative as usual; we discussed what we thought of Costa Rica and the Young Dreamers so far, something we learned, and our high/low for the day. We had some time to rest, which I spent writing this very blog post while everyone sat around playing cards in the main bungalow waiting for dinner. AnMei had come up to join us, the mood was noticeably lifted. They had been forced in their cabin for most of the day due to an unforeseen illness, everyone had been wishing her well throughout the day.

One thing I noticed was how on and off hot it was throughout the day, it would be blazing hot one moment, but then the wind would pick up and blow clouds over us, making it fairly cold. That night we all celebrated and played an intense game of cards before turning in to prepare for another hard days work in the morning.
